Natural gas commodity prices have risen significantly in recent months—just as gasoline prices at the pump have been rising. Due to the volatility of natural gas prices, MMU implemented a floating rate in March 2006. During the 2007-2008 winter the highest natural gas rate paid by MMU customers was $1.06 per 100 cubic feet (cf) in February 2008. In July 2008 customers paid $1.40 per 100 cf. The average household used 138 ccf of gas during the 2007-2008 winter, at $1.06 per ccf this cost customers $153.65. In July of 2008 this would have cost customers $200.57. Based on current trends, MMU expects the cost of natural gas to be significantly higher during the winter of 2008-2009 than in the previous winter. Macon Municipal Utilities is one of the six oldest public utilities west of the Mississippi River, and the third oldest in the State of Missouri. Beginning operation in January 1890 as the Macon Light, Heat and Power Company, our first mission was to improve public safety by installing electric street lights.

Today, MMU remains one of a handful of utilities in the nation that provide nearly all the community’s needs: electricity, natural gas, fresh water, and wastewater treatment.
